The He Art Museum (HEM) presents Away from the Sea, a solo exhibition of Sean Scully featuring 40 paintings and sculptures created since the 1960s. The exhibition traces the artist’s practice over half a century, revealing how Scully has developed a distinguished and prolific body of work through his distinct approach to contemporary abstraction. Scully has visited China many times, mostly in the north of the country. With Away from the Sea, his works have finally reached the heart of the south. At the He Art Museum, with the dimming or brightening of daylight, the colours in his paintings and sculptures ripple from light to dark. The viewer casts their gaze towards his creations, like stones submerged in the sea.

For the 2024 edition of Normandie Impressionniste, Sean Scully presents his works at Église Saint-Nicolas de Caen in France. The Romanesque church serves as the setting for a selection of large-scale paintings and monumental sculptures by Scully, who, in a career spanning 50 years, has created a remarkable body of work that fuses the traditions of European painting with those of American abstraction.

Sean Scully’s work will be presented in Uninsideout, a solo exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery. The exhibition displays several works donated by the artist to the museum, including a monumental painting titled Uninsideout, a series of digital prints based on drawings Scully made on an iPhone, ten aquatints, and a body of recent pencil drawings. Creating unity from diversity, the works not only serve to highlight the significant motifs at play within the artist’s oeuvre, but also lend emphasis to the wide range of media he uses and the importance of genre crossovers.

The Ludwig Museum, Koblenz, presents Géographies, an exhibition focusing on Sean Scully’s life stages and travels, from places where he has lived to those that have inspired him. Alongside 50 paintings, prints, sculptures, watercolours and pastels, the exhibition also brings together two important cycles: Eleuthera, created from 2015 to 2018, which refers to the artist’s stays on the Bahamian island of the same name, and Ghost, in which Scully critically examines the unrestricted use of weapons in the USA between 2018 and 2020.
