Wir freuen uns, Sie auf unsere Ausstellung Noticías da Lagoa [News from the Lagoon] mit neuen Werken von Marepe in der Goethestraße 2/3 aufmerksam zu machen.
Marepes künstlerisches Schaffen thematisiert soziale und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen. Sein Heimatland Brasilien und vor allem die Region Bahia, aus der er stammt, dienen dabei immer wieder als Referenz. Marepe erkundet die Gegensätzlichkeiten und Widersprüche kultureller Gewohnheiten und verweist dabei auf landestypische Traditionen und Bräuche, aber auch auf kolonialhistorische und politische Strukturen und Mechanismen. Zugrunde liegen seine persönlichen Erfahrungen und eigenen Interpretationen, die, sobald ausgestellt, unmittelbar neue Verbindungen eingehen, andere Kontexte herstellen und oft in globale Aussagen übersetzt werden können.
Seine Skulpturen und Objekte basieren auf diversen alltäglichen Materialien und Gegenständen, wie beispielsweise Gummibänder, Zuckerwatte, Rucksäcke, Schuhe, Fahrräder oder Bügeleisen. Bearbeitet, verformt und verfremdet bieten sie einen ungewohnten Blick auf die uns umgebenden Dinge und ermöglichen viele verschiedene Lesarten. Oft schwingt hierbei eine kritische Nuance mit, ein Sichtbarmachen nicht immer gerechter gesellschaftlicher Zustände, die der Künstler durchaus humorvoll skizziert. Marcel Duchamp und seine künstlerische Praxis spielen dabei unverkennbar eine wichtige Rolle, die sich im Gebrauch des Ready-made und einer Rekontextualisierung von Alltagsgegenständen niederschlägt. Doch ist es vor allem das Interesse an sozialen und zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen und Interaktionen, welches Marepes Werken innewohnt.
In seiner dritten Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Max Hetzler präsentiert Marepe eine Reihe neuer Werke, die sowohl Arbeiten auf Papier, Skulpturen als auch Installationen einschließt.
Die Arbeit Mochilas Gêmeas [Twin Backpacks], 2007, bestehend aus zwei Rucksäcken, die auf ihrer Rückseite die gemalte Abbildung eines liegenden Mannes zeigen, betont Marepes Interesse an sozialen Wechselbeziehungen. Nur gleichzeitig und nebeneinander getragen, wird aus dem Bild ein vollständiges Ganzes und Ober- und Unterkörper des abgebildeten Mannes können gemeinsam gesehen werden. So setzt die Arbeit eine Form performativer Interaktion der beiden Träger voraus, die nur in ihrem Zusammenwirken das Werk vollenden.
In der Serie Untitled, from the series Construção de Esquema [Scheme Construction], 2012 treibt Marepe die Idee des Ready-made auf die Spitze. Er nutzt Bleistiftminen um mit ihnen Zeichnungen anzufertigen. Die Mine an sich wird dabei nicht verwendet um eine gezeichnete Linie auf Papier zu hinterlassen, sondern wird selbst zur Linie, in dem Marepe sie auf das Papier legt. Die Linie wird so zum Objekt. Auch Renovação do Ar [Air Renewal], 2014, inspiriert von Duchamps Aire de Paris, 1919, greift die Auseinandersetzung mit alltäglichen Gegenständen auf. Einfache Deckenventilatoren und Autoreifen werden dabei zu futuristisch anmutenden Objekten, deren eigentliche Funktion obsolet wird.
Das titelgebende Werk Noticías da Lagoa [News from the Lagoon], 2014 reflektiert einerseits die zahlreichen Nachrichten, die im Rahmen der Fußballweltmeisterschaft oder in Bezug auf die wirtschaftliche Lage Brasiliens das Land unlängst in den Fokus der internationalen Presse gerückt und eine Vielzahl kritischer Diskussionen ausgelöst haben. Andererseits fühlt sich der Künstler aber auch an das berühmte Seestück Monets Impression, soleil levant von 1872 erinnert, welches der künstlerischen Bewegung ihren Namen gab.
Gleichzeitig wird in der Bleibtreustraße 45 eine Einzelausstellung mit neuen Gemälden von Michael Raedecker eröffnet.
Marepe wurde 1970 als Marcos Reis Peixoto in Santo Antônio de Jesus, Bahia in Brasilien geboren. Seine Werke wurden in namhaften Institutionen ausgestellt, unter anderem im Museu de Arte de São Paulo, São Paulo (2014); im Museu de Arte do Rio, Rio de Janeiro (2013); im Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2012); im IVAM, Valencia (2011); im Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokio (2008); Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo (2007); im Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro (2007); in der Tate Modern, London (2007) und im Centre Pompidou, Paris (2005). Marepe nahm an den Biennalen von São Paulo (2012; 2006), Sidney (2006), Istanbul (2003) und Venedig (2003) teil.
