ERNESTO NETO

Ernesto Neto has transformed the North Nave of the Grand Palais, Paris, into an immersive and sensory space with Nosso Barco Tambor Terra (Our Earth Drum Boat), 2024, a monumental installation made from crochet, bark and spices. The viewer is invited to walk through and interact with this multisensory environment, which explores the fundamental relationship between the body and the earth, through handcrafting, organic materials and ancestral rituals. The work is richly imbued with history and symbolism, using imagery and materials commonly associated with transatlantic voyages, including sails, canvas and ropes.

Neto’s installation incorporates a wide range of instruments from around the world. During periodic activations, visitors are invited to enter and play the drums hidden within the porous architecture. By uniting our cultural differences, the artist poetically evokes the possibility of universal communication.
