Galerie Max Hetzler is pleased to present Rosa See, a solo exhibition of Tal R and the artist’s inaugural exhibition with the gallery at Goethestraße 2/3, in Berlin.

Presenting a new body of work inspired by a trip to Iceland, Rosa See delves viewers into Copenhagen-based artist Tal R’s rich visual lexicon whilst probing the boundaries of representation itself. In these compositions – including drawings created en plein air and paintings developed in the studio – the artist depicts Icelandic lakes in vivid, non-naturalistic colour. The landscapes slip in and out of abstraction, suggesting a universe of luminous colours, exuberant patterns and palpable rhythm.

Depicted from various vantage points, Tal R’s lakes resemble amoebic forms which surge toward the viewer and push against the broad, curving shorelines that surround them. Brightly coloured mounds conjure mountain ranges, while globular clouds deliver rainfall in thick, agitated downward strokes. Elsewhere, bouncing lines suggest ripples in the water’s undulating surface, while minimally delineated pebbles, plants and spruces decorate the rocky shore.

Tal R’s play with shapes and colours finds centre stage in these compositions, which capture the landscape as much as they do the act of creation itself. ‘The interesting thing for the artist is that you start to develop language,’ Tal R says, ‘and the moment you create words, they are just on the tipping point of meaning something else.’ The colour pink bears its own associations: ‘It is both superficial and it means something […] it’s a very clichéd colour. Rosa is something to jump into.’ Indeed, Tal R’s lakes fluctuate in colour; bright coral waters give way to deeper fuchsia and more sinister mulberry tones, in turn speaking to the uncanny undercurrent beneath these pictures. Deceptively simple and formally reduced, the artist’s forms are nonetheless burgeoning with potential, restlessly redefining themselves as they summon a vision of nature in constant flux.

Similarly, the shapes of the paintings on view challenge definition. Reminiscent of puzzle pieces, folded papers or even keyholes – a term often invoked by the artist to describe art’s promise to depict other realms – these canvases dare the viewer to complete them. As the familiar tips into abstraction, we are prompted to consider the essential question of picture-making: how do we translate the world around us?

Tal R (*1967, Tel Aviv) lives and works in Copenhagen. Wir freuen uns, Sie auf Rosa See, eine Einzelausstellung von Tal R in der Goethestraße 2/3 in Berlin aufmerksam machen zu dürfen. Dies ist die erste Einzelausstellung des Künstlers in der Galerie.

Rosa See präsentiert eine neue Werkgruppe, die von einer Reise nach Island inspiriert wurde, und lässt den Betrachter in das vielfältige künstlerische Vokabular des in Kopenhagen lebenden Künstlers Tal R eintauchen, während er gleichzeitig die Grenzen der Darstellung selbst auslotet. In diesen Kompositionen - darunter Zeichnungen, die en plein air entstanden sind, und Gemälde, die im Atelier entwickelt wurden - stellt der Künstler isländische Seen in lebhaften, nicht-naturalistischen Farben dar. Die Landschaften gleiten in die Abstraktion hinein und wieder heraus und suggerieren ein Universum aus leuchtenden Farben, überschwänglichen Mustern und spürbarem Rhythmus.

Die aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln dargestellten Seen von Tal R ähneln Amöbenformen, die sich dem Betrachter entgegenstrecken und gegen die breiten, geschwungenen Uferlinien, die sie umgeben, drücken. Leuchtend farbige Hügel erinnern an Gebirgsketten, während runde Wolken den Niederschlag in dicken, unruhigen Strichen nach unten leiten. An anderer Stelle suggerieren hüpfende Linien Wellen auf der Wasseroberfläche, während sparsam gezeichnete Kieselsteine, Pflanzen und Fichten das felsige Ufer prägen.

Tal Rs spielerischer Umgang mit Formen und Farben rückt in den Mittelpunkt dieser Kompositionen, die die Landschaft ebenso einfangen wie den Akt des Schaffens selbst. „Das Interessante für den Künstler ist, dass man anfängt, eine Sprache zu entwickeln“, sagt Tal R, „und in dem Moment, indem man die Worte erschafft, stehen sie kurz davor, etwas anderes zu bedeuten.“ Die Farbe Rosa hat ihre eigenen Assoziationen: „Sie ist sowohl oberflächlich als auch bedeutungsvoll [...] sie ist eine sehr klischeehafte Farbe. Rosa ist etwas, auf das man sich stürzen kann.“ Tal Rs Seen schwanken tatsächlich in ihrer Farbe; leuchtendes korallenfarbenes Wasser wird durch dunkle Fuchsia- und düstere Maulbeertöne ersetzt, was wiederum auf den unheimlichen Unterton dieser Bilder verweist. Die täuschend einfachen und reduzierten Formen des Künstlers sind dennoch voller Potenzial und definieren sich rastlos neu, während sie eine Vision der Natur in ständigem Wandel hervorrufen.

In ähnlicher Weise hinterfragen auch die Formen der ausgestellten Leinwände ihre Definition. Sie erinnern an Puzzleteile, gefaltete Papiere oder sogar an Schlüssellöcher - ein Begriff, den der Künstler oft verwendet, um das Versprechen der Kunst zu beschreiben, andere Welten darzustellen - und fordern den Betrachter heraus, sie zu vervollständigen. Während das Vertraute in die Abstraktion kippt, werden wir dazu eingeladen, über die grundlegende Frage des Bildermachens nachzudenken: Wie übersetzen wir die Welt um uns herum?
